Eccentrics and True Believers: The Most Exceptional Bets Ever Made

Tennessee Williams once said, “Luck is believing you’re lucky.” And, for these gamblers, that saying proved to be somewhat of a mantra, especially when you decide to bet up to a million dollars on a single wager. Such was the case of Las Vegas casino owner  and his unbelievable bet for the XXIII Super Bowl.

In 1989, the San Francisco 49ers were facing the Cincinnati Bengals in the final at the Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami. Stupak decided to throw the house out the window and bet a cold hard million on the 49ers to win. The game kept a consistently tight score but, in a heart racing finale, the 49ers scored the winning touchdown with only 34 seconds to spare, giving them the glorious title and making an extremely daring man a million dollars richer. This bet also gave Stupak bragging rights, as it was the largest bet that has ever been made in Vegas.

However, these over-the-top wagers do not always end well. In 1980, William Lee Bergstrom reached Vegas legend status as the Phantom Gambler (a.k.a. The Suitcase Man). Anonymously, he entered the Binion’s Horseshoe Casino with $777,000 on a suitcase and placed it all on a single bet. He doubled his money instantly and left, disappearing for three years. In 1984, he reappeared in the casino and bet $1,000,000 on a single bet at a craps table. However, the goddess Fortuna was not on his side and he ended up losing the wager. This was the beginning of a dark streak for Bergstrom that year. The next year, almost a full year after his million dollars bust, he committed suicide in a hotel room. Although it was never confirmed, many say that he became too emotionally unstable to cope with the losses. That, plus the ending of a 10 year relationship with his younger lover John, ultimately drew this wagering maverick over the edge.

A few gamblers however, think more outside the box when it comes to their wagering ventures. For some men is not about money, is about pride and implants… breast implants. Enter Brian Zembic. This man has the reputation of being an avid gambler and the type of man that would literally do anything to win a bet.

In 1996, a friend bet Zembic $100,000 to get 38C breast implants and keep them for a year. Shortly after, Zembic contacted a friend who happened to be a plastic surgeon and underwent the breast augmentation procedure, placing the implants under his pectoral muscles. After a year, Zembic’s friend Jojo had to fork out the $100k. The strangest part of this tale is actually what happened afterwards. Zembic became a gambling celebrity, wrote a book called The man with the $100,000 breasts and other gambling stories, and got so accustomed to the implants that he decided to keep them for good. That just goes to show you than when you risk big, you can end up with more that you bargained for, even a busty new figure! Although some of these bets paid off, the risk of losing all is also great. If you want to become a consistent smart player, you should have great odds and bet to win, and there is no better place to do it that at The Virtual Casino.
