How Secure are Credit/Debit/Prepaid Cards?
When you play at an online casino you will notice that the preferred payment method are cards; credit cards, debit cards and prepaid cards. This is mostly because they are on of the most secure methods and most players take that for granted and are unaware of the great effort that is put into making these cards secure.
Today, I would like to explain how security is enforced in this form of payment so that players can feel more confident when using them because they will know what is going on.
The Payment Card Industry (PCI) is the name of the combined cards industry and it has instituted a Security Standards Council. Some of the companies involved in the creation of this council are American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB International, MasterCard Worldwide and Visa Inc. They have stated that this council’s mission is the ongoing development, enhancement, storage, dissemination and implementation of security standards for account data protection.
They have also come up with a comprehensive set of requirements that all cards providers are supposed to fullfill. The first one of these involves building and maintaining a secure network. All card services providers are required to install and maintain a firewall configuration to protect all data from their clients. It is essential that the vendor-supplied defaults for system passwords and other security parameters are not continued but are changed immediately.
The second principle is to protect cardholder’s data in two instances, while it is stored on servers and while transmission across public networks. The companies use data encryption protocols during the transmission.
Companies also use a regularly updated anti-virus software because they need to implement a strong access control system. This is why the physical and electronic access to the cardholder’s data is restricted. Staff members who are allowed to see the data must login with a unique ID and password so that all of their transactions can be traced.
All card companies must be tested on the compliance of the principles mentioned above to be able to provide a service. If they are successful they will be certified by the Security Standards Council. We recommend that you find out if your current card provider has this certification and if not, we recommend you to find one that does for your security.
